Overview
Surendranath Evening College, established in 1961, stands as a beacon of higher education, particularly for working students and those with daytime obligations. With a legacy rooted in academic excellence and holistic development, the college has continually served as a vital platform for personal and intellectual growth. The Department of Urdu has played a pivotal role in this mission since the college's inception. Urdu has been offered at both intermediate and undergraduate levels from the beginning. Recognizing the increasing interest in the language, the department introduced Elective Urdu at the undergraduate level in 2002. This was followed by the launch of the Honours course in Urdu in 2005, marking a significant expansion in advanced linguistic and literary studies in this culturally rich language.
The Department of Urdu is supported by a dedicated team comprising one full-time faculty member, Dr. Nusrat Jahan, and three State-Aided College Teachers (SACTs): Dr. Sufia Shireen, Dr. Shabana Afrin Javed, and Md. Parvez Tahir. The faculty members bring with them strong academic credentials and a shared commitment to delivering quality education in Urdu language and literature.
Their consistent engagement in teaching and participation in seminars, workshops, and academic events contributes to a dynamic and intellectually enriching learning environment. This atmosphere inspires students to develop a deeper appreciation for the subject and encourages many to pursue higher studies in Urdu.
The Head of the Department plays a key role in coordinating academic activities, facilitating collaboration among faculty, and ensuring that the diverse academic needs of students are addressed with care and commitment.
Strengths of the Department
1. Blending Youth and Experience The department thrives on a dynamic combination of experienced educators and energetic young faculty. This synergy fosters a balanced, vibrant academic environment. 2. Modern and Evolving Pedagogy Rooted in a rich academic tradition, the department continues to embrace modern teaching methods and updated academic practices. This commitment to innovation ensures meaningful faculty-student engagement and contributes to a progressive and forward-looking academic culture.
